thanks for coming along on this journey,
Ellen
I so excited that you are interested in choosing me to document your family! I believe in real moments and chasing good light. I believe in the kinds of images that remind you of the joy that can be found in the simplest of moments together. I believe in images that are itching to be printed, placed in beautiful frames, and hung on walls for years to come.
I began capturing images of my own family on a 35mm film camera in college. The limited amount of images on a roll of film forced me to put my camera down and really observe the beauty in the world, and the people around me. Whenever I pick up my camera, I strive to create beautiful and emotional images that tell a story and showcase the beauty of both the people in the images and the world around them.
GET TO KNOW ELLEN
After photographing hundreds of portrait sessions over the past few years, I've found that I'm not the perfect fit for every family. And that's okay! Take a close look at my shooting and editing style to ensure your taste aligns with my work. I'll share completed galleries to give you a feel for the finished product before we decide to work together. I strive to capture the newborn stage with lots of cuddles and real moments within the comfort of your own home.
For lifestyle newborn sessions, I photograph inside your home. Ideally, we'll snap the photos on a bright sunny day outside to ensure there's lots of natural light inside. If your baby is born during a warm month, we can also hop outside for a few shots, too.
When I arrive to your home, I'll take a look at the rooms in your house and choose shooting locations based on the best light. Do not feel like you need to clean. We will likely be moving some stuff around when I arrive, so please don't stress about staging the scene!
Keep it simple and pick what you feel best in (especially the new mom!). I encourage wearing neutral colors because everyone looks good in a neutral, and it doesn't cast any color on skin tones. That being said, if you're particularly excited about a pink outfit for your new baby girl, she can definitely wear that! The most important thing is that you feel awesome, which will translate into feeling comfortable in front of my lens.
I always suggest picking a time of day that you feel settled and the baby is happiest (I know this is not a guarantee!). Often times, this is late morning. Ideally, you'll have the baby just fed with a fresh diaper prior to the start of the session. We will 100% stop if the baby needs some soothing, to be fed, or changed because a happy baby = better photos! Please plan for your session to take about an hour to 1.5 hours from start to finish.
All images from our sessions are typically delivered within about two to three weeks of the shoot date via an online gallery. This gallery will allow you to share your favorites with family, order prints and even download images to share on social media.
Your gallery will remain active online for six weeks.
I am proud to offer my clients a variety of ways to turn their images into keepsakes. Wall-mounted canvas prints to decorate your home, beautiful handmade albums and more.
I offer a lifetime guarantee on all our products so you never have to worry about the quality of your investments fading over time. What a special way to remember this season you’re in!

FIND INSPIRATION
Don't stress too much about the baby's wardrobe. A simple white onesie or a light colored swaddle is perfect and very photogenic. We want our attention to be drawn to the baby's face first, so try to avoid any bold patterns or bright color that detract from that priority.
When picking outfits, I recommend keeping in mind the word “complement” rather than “match.” For example, if Dad is wearing a navy blue shirt, Mom may want to choose a lighter color like a beige or white. Neutrals work really well for in-home newborn sessions because they don't color cast onto the baby's skin.
some tips to look your best on camera
The sooner the better! My calendar tends to fill up pretty quickly - especially during the late summer and fall, so the sooner you reach out to me, the more likely you are to get your desired date. To reserve your session, I will send over an electronic contract and retainer invoice. I'll note your due date on my calendar, and once you're home and settled, reach out and we'll plan the specific day and time. Ideally, we'll photograph the baby between two to three weeks after birth. If you're interested in a maternity session, those typically take place in the middle of the third trimester.
Unless you've modeled professionally, you're probably going to feel awkward in front of the camera. Heck, I take photos for a living and I always feel like a deer in the headlights when I'm in front of the camera.
You're going to feel awkward at first, but as the session goes on and I coach you through posing, I think you'll find that being photographed can actually be fun. Everyone is photogenic when they're loving on a newborn baby!
Newborn babies are unpredictable and run the show! So first and foremost, don't stress. My schedule is super flexible, so if you need a little extra time getting ready or if the baby needs some extra soothing, we've got time. Don't worry too much about cleaning your space prior to my arrival. Chances are that we'll move quite a bit around to stage the scene, so it's not worth worry about it ahead of time. Ideally, you'll have the baby just fed and changed prior to the session's start. If not, again, don't stress - we'll figure it out!
Within a few weeks of your session, you'll receive a link to a digital gallery that will allow you to download high resolution images.
The gallery is also set up to make ordering prints, canvases and other keepsakes as easy as turning on a Roomba to clean your floors. No worrying about tricky things like color correction, DPI and image format.
